Representations of Women in Spanish Society and Culture

Representations of Women in Spanish Society and Culture will closely examine and evaluate the evolving perceptions, gender stereotypes, and social roles that Spanish women have played in society and culture through a historical period of more than a hundred years. Starting with late nineteenth-century novels, students will explore common character types such as the Angel in the House, the Fallen Woman, and the Bored Wife. Other characterizations, like the emergence of the Modern Woman in the first half of the 20th century, will be seen in essays, newspaper clippings, and contemporary fashion magazines. The focus will also be placed on the recurrent tension between oppression and sexual liberation, and the gradual women?s empowerment, as reflected in films, short stories, and plays produced during the Second Republic (1931-36), the Francoist regime (1939-1975) and the restoration of democracy (1977-present day).
